When I travel, I love to make lists of what I will need and build a small capsule around that so I am maximizing the value of each piece in my suitcase (learn more about my process here). I started doing this back in college–whenever I traveled, my sister would help me pull outfits and we would actually take pictures of the options with accessories so I would know exactly what to choose. I wanted to show you an example of my process in case you struggle with this as well!
I usually start by thinking about the events I need to attend. For this capsule, let’s say I am doing a weekend away in NYC with my husband (not much of a stretch given that we were just up there last weekend!). In my imaginary world, I am leaving the kids at home, though…
As I mentioned in my packing post, I like to choose a color palette. I almost always pick black and white with a pop of color because those colors show up most often in my wardrobe.
This selection contains everything I need for two travel days, one day exploring the city, and one night out to dinner–with a variety of options! Let’s take it day by day.
This is really my go to travel outfit right now–comfortable pants (I love these Essential Crops), and soft layers. In this case, I have paired a Fitted Tank and Limitless Button Tunic for a simple color blocked outfit that is perfect for a road trip (or a flight, but we drive to NYC). Slip on shoes are a must for travel. I tend to not wear jewelry whatever my mode of transport because it ends up bothering me, but I feel like this kind of outfit can be cute even without accessories.
If we have time to head out after arrival (in this scenario, we usually have time to go to dinner after we get in), I like to swap out part of my outfit to look a little more pulled together. For this trip, I would swap the crops for a pair of Pixie Crops (similar to our amazing Knit Jeggings but in cropped length) and add a necklace to take it from glorified pajamas to casual chic.
A Day in NYC
If I’m in the city, I want to be out tasting all the food and shopping all the stores! I love walking around people watching and discovering places off the beaten path. Cities are pretty much the only place I like to go for long aimless walks. I need to be comfy to do that!
I have two options here to do that! The same Pixie Crops from the night before plus a pop of color in the form of a Tiered Tunic. I can add the Limitless Button Down Tunic as a layer if the weather calls for it. I’d also throw on my comfy flip flops and a fun statement necklace to take my casual outfit to a little more chic.
A childless trip would not be complete without a romantic dinner out! I don’t like super fancy restaurants, but I love little places with outdoor seating in the summer that have twinkle lights or candles or real, actual tablecloths…and it’s a great excuse to dress up a little! In my capsule, I have so many options. I love the Lace Duster because it immediately takes any piece up a notch.
I love the black Kahlo dress under it for the dressiest option, but I could also stick with my daytime outfit and just add the duster if I didn’t feel up to changing. Or I could go somewhat in between in grab the black Essential Tank and keep it with the Pixie Crops.
For my final travel day, I would pull the Essential Crops out again, but pull the Essential Tank out to go with it. After a weekend of indulging in the city, I definitely wouldn’t be putting on a fitted tank!
I have managed to make a bunch of outfit options from just a few pieces that would fit easily in a weekend bag! That’s what I love about capsules–they give you more options without overstuffing your luggage.
