Burnout. It’s a huge risk in direct sales because our success or failure is dependent entirely on our hustle. We go 100mph until we hit a wall and then don’t want to even look at work for a week. Obviously, this creates a problem for consistency! Here are some strategies I have started implementing in my business to avoid burnout and keep work moving at a constant pace.
Make a Schedule
Schedules are key to avoiding that headlong crash into a wall! If your business is online (as mine is), there’s really no escaping it unless you set some hard boundaries. I worked from the minute I woke up in the morning until the minute I put the phone down to sleep at night for the past year, which has led to nothing but exhaustion and stress. Lately, I have been setting specific hours to work. They may not be typical business hours, but they work for me because I used Facebook/Instagram Insights to look at when my clients are online and designed my schedule around theirs. I am also unplugging at 9pm at night unless I have a live. This lets me recenter myself and relax for an hour before bed.
Commit to Self Care
This is a huge issue I see with my friends who work long hours. We obviously can’t let our families and adult responsibilities slide, so the thing that usually gets dropped to meet goals is us. I am trying to set aside 30 minutes a day to take care of my mental and physical health. Instead of working on my phone while I am at the gym, I am taking time to listen to music. Instead of working on social media at night until I fall asleep, I am picking up a book and reading. I am making time for friends again. You absolutely have to take care of yourself to avoid crashing. You can’t fill others’ cups if yours is empty!

Keep Yourself Healthy
One of the most common things I have seen with social media retailers across all companies is weight gain. It’s definitely an issue I had! When you’re working 24/7, one the things that gets lost is exercise. Another is meal planning. Cooking healthy meals frequently takes more time and planning than grabbing snacks or running through a drive through. Higher stress levels can also cause you to retain weight or push you to overeat. Making time for exercise, meal planning, and cooking will keep you from running into this issue. And sleep! I know so many of us who sacrifice sleep to stay up photographing and shipping. Nothing beats the importance of sleep, so hire help or schedule your daytime hours to make sure you are able to go to bed at a decent hour.
If Burnout Occurs
Sometimes despite best efforts, you are going to have bad days where you don’t even want to look at work. Take a mental health day and come back refreshed! I have found that the work I produce when I am running on empty is not nearly as good as when I’m happy and relaxed. I also make more mistakes, which ends up costing my business more than if I had just taken the day off.
